FAQs

Why become a License Stop vendor?

  • Each renewal generates additional profits for your business.
  • New customers are brought into your store.
  • Customers purchase other products during their visit to renew their plates.

How does my customer benefit?

  • Convenience. With License Stop locations spread across Illinois, the customer has many options where to renew compared to having to drive miles to the nearest DMV office. Plus, our vendors offer to renew plates according to their regular business hours, not the limited hours of the DMV offices. In many instances, the customer can renew anytime of the day and any day they wish. That is convenience!
  • Saves Time. Renewing at a License Stop location saves time because there are no long lines. The renewal process only takes two minutes!

How does my company become a License Stop vendor?

  • ENROLL NOW by simply completing the enrollment form on the Enroll Now page of our website
  • If you have numerous locations you can fax or email us a list of locations and we can handle the enrollment for you.

What startup costs are associated with providing this service to my customers?

  • If you have the necessary computer equipment already installed then your cost to get started is $0. Please refer to the question below for required equipment.

What type of computer equipment is required?

  • PC With Windows 2000, XP or Vista.
  • Approved Laser Printer using OEM Toner
  • High Speed Internet Connection (i.e. DSL or cable)

Will an HP (or similar) laser printer work?

  • Yes, if you use the toner recommended and produced by the manufacturer. Toner purchased from discount companies refilling used toner cartridges will not be acceptable.

Am I required to sign a long-term contract with License Stop?

  • Your company is not bound by a long-term contract. Participation is voluntary. You can stop renewing any time.

How does the electronic renewal process work?

  • The customer presents the Vehicle Registration Renewal Notice from the State of Illinois to your staff member. Only three items on the notice need to be input into the computer:
    • Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)
    • License Plate Number
    • Plate expiration date
  • Your staff verifies with the customer that his/her vehicle matches the data on the computer screen.
  • You collect the state renewal fee plus a convenience fee of no more than $5.50.
  • Your staff hands the state supplied sticker to the customer.
  • Transaction completed in less than 2 minutes!

How do funds change hands?

  • An electronic funds transfer account is setup with your bank; this account is where you will deposit funds collected from renewals.
  • CVR, on behalf of the Secretary of State, logs all renewals taking place at your facility on a daily basis. Two days later CVR electronically withdraws the amount collected from your customers for the state renewal fees.
  • Monthly, CVR sends you a report verifying the number of transactions taking place at your facility for the prior month. Seven to ten days later, CVR electronically withdraws from your account an amount equal to the number of renewal transactions performed multiplied by the CVR transaction fee.
  • All withdrawals come from monies previously collected.

What support do I get?

  • Lifetime training for you and your staff, and 800 support
Can I advertise the Program?
  • Absolutely. Your enrollment includes participation in the Renewal Program plus official License Stop marketing materials and training.

How are transactions completed if my computer, the internet, or the State of Illinois’ website goes down?

  • Unfortunately, you will not be able to complete the transaction for your customer in the event you cannot access the State electronic files. Advise your customer to come back later or take his/her name and telephone number and call them when you are able to reconnect.

Does my company incur any liability by becoming a vendor?

  • You are responsible for the safe keeping of the license sticker.
  • If you agree to take checks for the renewal transactions you will assume the collection risks normally associated with check cashing.

What should I do if a sticker is damaged or unusable for any reason?

  • Unusable/damaged stickers must be returned to the Secretary of State. Instruction is provided during installation.

What do I do if a sticker is lost or stolen?

  • You must file a police report immediately and send a copy to the Secretary of State. Failure to reasonably safeguard this inventory can result in removal from the Renewal Program and fines up to $78 per sticker.
